Assignment #2

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a post-apocalyptic fiction novel, in which the father's demise, and a never ending love for his son are utilize to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole.
The father and the son only have each other to rely on. "...shuffling through the ash, each the other's world entire" (McCarthy 3). Whereever they go and whatever they are going through, they rely on each other to survive and to keep moving forward toward their destination. The novel portrays the never ending love from the father to his son and all the things that he will do to protect and make sure that his son is safe and sound. "My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?" (McCarthy 39). This quote imply that the father is willing to take the risk in order to protect his son. He is being protective and doesn't want anything bad to happen to his one and only son. Living in a cruel world, the father knows that someday, he will have to leave his son behind. "He was beginning to think that death was finally upon them and that they should find some place to hide..." (McCarthy 66). The father knows that life goes on and he can't be there to protect his son forever.
McCarthy's novel, The Road, showed a true paternal love between the father and his son. The father is willing to do anything, even risking his own life to keep the son safe, away from the dangerous, cruel world.
